Art-Terre32

Activity of the association

The actions of the association Art Terre32 mainly take place in the village of Flamarens, and more specifically at the Château, which is made available to the association by its owners for cultural activities.

The owners of the Château aim to transcend the idea of ‘personal property’ by fulfilling their duty of transmission and sharing a common architectural and cultural heritage, enriched and valued culturally.

This monument is considered by its owners to be a heritage passed down from past generations and, as such, a common good. From 1983 to 2023, they have taken on the preservation, restoration, safeguarding, and opening to the public of this heritage at their own expense.

Since 2023, the Ministry of Culture, the Occitanie Region, the Gers Department, the Heritage Foundation, patrons such as VMF, RBNB, and many anonymous donors have supported the new project for the restoration of the roofs initiated by the owners.

The project

The association’s mission is to bring to life the heart of the village of Flamarens in Gers (32) through culture in its broadest sense. It aims to promote the rehabilitation of the architectural, archaeological, historical, and aesthetic heritage of the Château de Flamarens and its site, encompassing its restoration, safeguarding, enhancement, promotion, and influence.

The association aspires to highlight the entirety of culturals heritages, whether architectural, material, or immaterial. When discussing heritage, people often think of built heritage and architecture, but it also encompasses sculpture, painting, theater, stained glass, music, literature, folklore, and language, inherent to immaterial heritage.

How the Art-Terre32 Association Was Born

1983

In a state of ruin, covered in pigeon droppings and overtaken by ivy, the Château de Flamarens is saved by its new owner, Jacques GADEL. Not at all daunted by the magnitude of the task, Jacques GADEL fully commits himself to restoring the château to life. Over the years, he authentically restores the floors, roofs, and ceilings. Each summer, his family and many friends accompany him, encourage him, and share his passion.

1990

His son Arthur works with lime, while his wife, Marie-Hélène, takes care of their children. The men build, and Marie-Hélène supports their efforts. As the château transforms, she begins to dream. She imagines the troubadours and entertainers who once animated the many festivals that brought the village together. She wishes to do something meaningful: to breathe life back into this impressive testament of the past! To open the gates so that the château can regain its soul. To ensure that everyone loves this place enough to remember it and return, whether in dreams or reality. This becomes her mission, her project for the Château de Flamarens.

1994

During the second week of August, the first 'friends' night is organized with the permission of Jacques GADEL. Friends from the village, as well as those coming from Paris or returning from Spain, become the first guests of a series of themed costume parties and dinners. In August 2003, the memorable 'Flamarens-Stock' evening hosts over 120 guests. These celebrations mark the summers and become a must-attend annual event until 2008.

Throughout these years, friendliness and talents have become the key words of this unique community. Each person comes to the Château de Flamarens with their talents, passions, and desire to contribute to the restoration of this majestic building that has welcomed them for nearly 30 years and has been watching over the life of the village for over 800 years.

2009

That summer represents a transition from family celebration to the idea of a festival open to the public. Jacques GADEL’s health does not allow for the summer to be celebrated as in previous years. He passed away on January 8, 2010.

2010

The first concert open to the public takes place at the Château de Flamarens. Jacques GADEL loved music. On some summer evenings, he would set out his speakers in the courtyard and treat us to 'his concert.' From this memory, this sorrow, as well as the beautiful encounter with Karin and David Meignan from the duo 'La Rouquiquinante,' the desire is born to honor our dear Jacques’s memory with music in the courtyard of his château.

That summer, between Art and Earth, something beautiful emerges, and on August 11, the duo 'La Rouquiquinante' inaugurates what will become the 'Les Musicales de Flamarens' Festival the following summer."
The association Art-Terre32 will be created on January 7, 2012, by Marie-Hélène PROUST, Stéphane HAMON, Constance FEREL, and Camille GADEL SYLVA-ZUNIGA.
